In our Meet the Scouts series, we get to know the people who make the Scout magic possible. This week, we caught up with Mathew Basset, Head of Engineering for Scout Canada to learn how Scout’s journey with Workday has helped open up new possibilities and opportunities for our engineering team.
Matthew Basset leads the Scout RFP software engineering team in Canada and plays a pivotal role in ensuring that we deliver the highest quality products to our customers. Matthew was one of our first Canadian hires and he’s looking for more motivated team members to keep him company in our Toronto office.
Read on to discover what Matthew loves about Scout’s culture and find out about what growth opportunities available for his engineering team!
Why did you join Scout?
I joined Scout because of its amazing culture! I saw a fantastic group of people who were driven to provide the best possible product, and I knew I had to join.
Did anything surprise you about Scout once you were working here?
The tremendous growth of both the platform and the adoption in the industry. Once I learned more about Scout, I realized how underserved the sourcing industry actually was–which is why Scout has seen this amazing hockey stick growth in such a short time.
How would you describe the environment at Scout?
Friendly, open and collaborative. Everyone you work with truly wants you to succeed and will do whatever they can to help you.
What are the biggest challenges of your role?
When you’re working to disrupt a fast growing industry, you need to bring your best to the office every day. I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with incredibly bright people here at Scout. Part of the way that we have done this is being dedicated to upholding a very high bar. Investing in people has made Scout what it is today and we want to continue to bring in motivated and hardworking team members going forward.
What makes a person successful in your position?
Collaborating with others, bringing your best, and building those personal connections. Engineering has so many different stakeholders: our customers, product management, customer support, sales, and more. To be successful, you need to nurture those relationships and work hard– while having fun along the way, of course!
Can you describe the advancement opportunities on your team?
With Scout now under the Workday umbrella, there is tremendous growth potential for everyone on the team. This might mean growing into a management role, working on new technologies, or architecting more complex systems. We are hoping to significantly scale our engineering team to support our evolving product which means there are many exciting opportunities for advancement.
How do you see the market opportunity for Scout’s product?
Merging with Workday has uniquely positioned us to start covering all of Spend Management. We can now leverage some of the existing functionality between both platforms which opens up the market even further to customers that may not have previously known about our product.
What do you think makes us stand out from the rest in terms of places to work?
At Scout, we really try to practice the principles we espouse and look for during our interview and onboarding process. I’ve worked with many companies that say one thing upfront and then do another in practice. This is definitely not the case with Scout.
What else should interested candidates know about Scout?
You’re going to be challenged from day one–and that is a great thing! You’ll have the opportunity to grow quickly and work on amazing technology with outstanding people in a fast-growing industry. It’s very rewarding.
We are always looking for new Scouts! With our recent acquisition by Workday, the sky’s the limit for our engineering team and we are growing fast.
